Leaders of the Group of Seven (G7) nations wrapped up their annual summit in France with a renewed display of unity on global security, economic resilience and emerging technologies, underscoring the influence of the world’s most powerful industrialised economies on international affairs.

The summit brought together leaders from the United States, Canada, Britain, France, Germany, Italy and Japan — economies that collectively account for a significant share of global output, trade, investment and financial flows.

Together, the bloc continues to shape policies that influence everything from energy markets and international finance to technology and security.

A key outcome of the meeting was a joint declaration reaffirming support for Ukraine and pledging to increase pressure on Russia through tougher sanctions, particularly targeting the country’s oil and gas revenues that help finance the war.

The statement marked a notable show of consensus among the seven nations at a time of growing geopolitical tensions.

The leaders also welcomed progress in efforts to ease tensions in the Middle East following a US-brokered understanding with Iran, saying they were prepared to support measures aimed at preserving regional stability and safeguarding global energy supplies.

Beyond security issues, the summit focused heavily on strengthening economic resilience in an increasingly fragmented world economy.

Leaders agreed to deepen cooperation on securing critical mineral supply chains, reducing vulnerabilities in strategic industries and lowering dependence on single suppliers for resources essential to modern manufacturing and clean energy technologies.

Artificial intelligence emerged as another major agenda item. The leaders endorsed closer cooperation on AI governance and innovation, seeking to harness the technology’s economic potential while addressing concerns over safety, accountability and misinformation.

The summit also advanced collaboration in quantum technologies, wildfire management, countering transnational repression and tackling migrant smuggling networks, reflecting the broadening scope of issues confronting advanced economies.

French President Emmanuel Macron, host of the summit, said the gathering demonstrated the ability of democratic nations to coordinate responses to global challenges despite growing geopolitical uncertainty.

Analysts said the most significant achievement of the meeting was the preservation of unity among the G7 members on major international issues. The bloc’s collective stance on Ukraine, energy security and emerging technologies signaled that the group remains a central force in shaping the global agenda.

While the summit did not produce a sweeping economic package, it reinforced the G7’s role as a forum where the world’s leading advanced economies coordinate policies that can influence global markets, investment trends and international security.
