The United States has warned of an imminent terror threat in Somalia, weeks after stepping up airstrikes against militant groups in the Horn of Africa nation.

The US Embassy in Mogadishu issued a security alert on Tuesday, citing “credible information” about potential attacks targeting key locations, including Aden Adde International Airport in the capital.

The embassy directed its personnel to suspend all movements due to heightened risks.

“Terrorists continue to plot kidnappings, bombings, and other attacks in Somalia,” the advisory stated. “They may strike with little or no warning, targeting areas where large crowds gather and Westerners frequent.”

The warning follows a series of US military operations aimed at degrading al-Shabab and Islamic State fighters in Somalia.

The Pentagon confirmed multiple airstrikes in February, targeting militant hideouts in central and northern Somalia, as part of ongoing counterterrorism efforts.

Somalia has remained a focal point in Washington’s counterterrorism strategy, with US Africa Command conducting joint operations with Somali forces.

Al-Shabab, which seeks to overthrow the government, has previously carried out high-profile attacks in Mogadishu and beyond, prompting increased security measures.

The US State Department’s level four travel advisory, which has been in effect since July 2024, urges American citizens to avoid travel to Somalia due to terrorism, crime, and civil unrest.

While Somalia’s security forces have intensified operations against militants, insurgents continue to exploit security gaps, raising concerns over the country’s stability.

The latest US warning highlights the persistent threat, as Somali authorities brace for potential attacks amid ongoing military campaigns.
