The Port of Seattle Commission has criticised the Trump administration’s latest travel ban, warning that the move could damage international commerce, undermine civil liberties, and erode America’s reputation as a global destination.

In a strongly worded statement, the commission said the new restrictions ran counter to its mission of fostering inclusive economic growth through trade, travel and job creation, particularly at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA), the region’s primary aviation hub.

“This travel ban sends the wrong message to the world,” the port authority said.

“It contradicts the values of justice and dignity that we uphold and risks deterring international travellers, immigrants and business partners from engaging with the United States.”

President Donald Trump expanded the controversial travel ban in early 2020, barring immigration from six additional countries — Nigeria, Eritrea, Myanmar and Kyrgyzstan, as well as placing restrictions on Sudan.

These nations join others, including Iran, Libya, North Korea, Somalia, Syria, Venezuela and Yemen, under a policy first introduced in 2017 that critics have labelled discriminatory and politically motivated.

Although no direct flights from the newly targeted countries arrive at SEA, port officials warned that the broader impact of the policy could still be felt.

They said the measures could discourage visitors from other regions, reduce confidence in US immigration fairness, and complicate international business ties, especially in the Pacific Northwest.

The port also raised concerns over a series of recent immigration policies, including tighter asylum rules, increased detention of visa holders, and a sharp drop in refugee admissions, which they argue have not contributed to safety but have instead compromised America’s global standing.

“We believe this approach damages our country’s reputation and makes the US less attractive as a destination for travellers and migrants alike,” the statement read.

The Port of Seattle pledged to continue advocating for open and equitable travel policies, saying it would prioritise community interests, economic vitality, and the protection of civil rights.
