KQ Halts Mayotte, Comoros Flights Indefinitely After Cyclone Chido.

Kenya Airways has indefinitely suspended flights to Mayotte and Comoros due to the impact of Tropical Cyclone Chido, which hit the Indian Ocean islands on December 14, 2024.

Flights to Mayotte had been suspended earlier on Monday, while services to Comoros were expected to resume later that evening.

However, both have now been suspended indefinitely.

Government authorities in both countries issued alerts following the cyclone, which caused widespread disruptions.

While the airport in Comoros had reopened temporarily, it will now remain closed until December 21, 2024, as essential repairs are carried out to address runway damage caused by the storm.

Mayotte’s airport remains closed until further notice.

“For the safety of our staff and customers, our flights into Mayotte and Comoros remain suspended until further notice,” Kenya Airways said in a statement.

The carrier apologised for the disruption and assured travellers that their safety, as well as that of staff, remains a top priority.

“We continue to monitor the situation and will provide updates as soon as we have more information,” it added.

Cyclone Chido, which made landfall on December 14, has affected the region with heavy rains and strong winds, forcing the suspension of flight operations.

Kenya Airways expressed solidarity with those impacted, saying it will support recovery efforts during the aftermath of the cyclone.

“Our hearts go out to everyone affected by this adverse weather event. We are here to offer support during this recovery period,” the airline said.

The cyclone was expected to persist over the region until December 16, with authorities warning of potential risks to infrastructure and travel.
