KQ Challenges Uganda Airlines with Gatwick Launch

Kenya Airways (KQ) will begin direct flights to London’s Gatwick Airport next summer, aiming to maintain its share of passengers that it might lose to Uganda Airlines, which is launching a similar route early in the year.
Kenya’s national carrier announced on Monday that it will operate three weekly “Red Eye” flights to Gatwick, complementing its daily service to Heathrow, one of its most profitable routes.
Uganda Airlines plans to commence flights to Gatwick in quarter one of 2025, becoming the first regional airline offering direct connections to south London.
The move would have given the Ugandan carrier a near-monopoly on the route, offering a convenient alternative for passengers bound for Gatwick.
The airline plans to deploys its modern Airbus A330-800neo aircraft on the route, known for fuel efficiency and reduced carbon emissions.
The direct service will draw passengers who previously relied on Kenya Airways and connecting flights to reach Gatwick, saving them both time and money.
With its Gatwick route, Kenya Airways seeks to protect its market base and reinforce its status as a regional aviation hub. The night flights from Nairobi will operate on Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays, raising KQ’s total weekly flights to London to 10.
Kenya Airways CEO Allan Kilavuka said the Gatwick service aligns with the airline’s route expansion strategy, enhancing convenience for passengers.
“This is just the beginning of our expansion plans for the UK market,” Kilavuka said. “The United Kingdom is essential and strategic for Kenya Airways and Kenya. It provides a gateway for trade, tourism, education, business, leisure travel, and diaspora connections.”
He added that the addition of Gatwick to the airline’s network would offer KQ passengers more travel options and a schedule tailored to their needs.
Kenya Airways’ move is seen as a response to increased competition from Uganda Airlines, which has steadily gained traction with its Gatwick service.
