Kenya Ranks Third in African Cybercrime Targets

Kenya has emerged as the third most prominent target for cybercriminals across Africa, trailing behind Nigeria and South Africa, according to the country’s communication regulator.
Over the past year, the nation has weathered an astonishing 860 million cyberattacks, a stark escalation compared to the 7.7 million incidents reported in 2017, according to the Communications Authority of Kenya (CA).
CA revealed that these attacks have grown in frequency, sophistication, and scale, primarily aimed at disrupting the country’s critical information infrastructure.
In a notable incident in July, a high-profile cyberattack, attributed to the pro-Russian hacking group Anonymous Sudan, severed access to over 5,000 online government services in Kenya.
The attack disrupted essential functions such as visa and passport applications, as well as driving license renewals. Furthermore, online train booking systems and mobile money transactions were paralyzed, underscoring the severity of the breach.
The regulator’s findings shed light on the nature of these cyber threats. A significant 79 percent of the recorded attacks within the last year resulted from cybercriminals infiltrating the computer systems of various organisations.
Another 14 percent involved the utilisation of malicious software, while 6.5 percent focused on overwhelming servers with traffic to overload their infrastructure. The remaining attacks were aimed at exploiting vulnerabilities in web applications.
The surge in cyberattacks in Kenya highlights the pressing need for improved cybersecurity measures within the country’s digital landscape.
As cyber threats continue to evolve in complexity and scale, safeguarding critical information infrastructure has become an imperative task for Kenyan authorities and organisations alike.
Additionally, the country’s rise to become the third most-targeted nation by cybercriminals in Africa underscores the global challenge of combating cybercrime and the urgency of international cooperation in addressing this growing menace.
