Ethiopia Secures Major Aviation Boost with New Boeing Regional Office

Boeing has opened a regional office in Addis Ababa, expanding its presence in Africa and deepening ties with Ethiopia, one of its biggest customers on the continent.

The new office, which will serve as Boeing’s administrative hub for Africa, comes as Ethiopian Airlines continues to strengthen its fleet with new orders from the US aircraft manufacturer.

“Our expanded presence in Ethiopia reflects our long-term commitment to Africa’s aviation sector,” said Kuljit Ghata-Aura, president of Boeing Middle East, Türkiye, Africa and Central Asia.

“This office will enable us to work more closely with over 60 airline customers across Africa, forge strategic partnerships, and support the development of a safe and efficient aviation industry.”

Ethiopia is a key market for Boeing, with Ethiopian Airlines operating one of the largest Boeing fleets in Africa and having recently placed new aircraft orders to support its long-term expansion plans.

The Addis Ababa office will be led by Henok Teferra Shawl, managing director for Boeing Africa.

“Being closer to our customers, government stakeholders and suppliers will help us deliver tailored solutions that address the continent’s aviation needs,” he said.

Boeing also maintains an office in Johannesburg and has field service representatives in several African countries, including Kenya, Egypt, Morocco and South Africa.

The US planemaker, which has operated in Africa for more than 75 years, supports local aviation growth through training, digital tools and collaboration with regional and international aviation bodies.

It also works with suppliers in Ethiopia, Morocco and South Africa, with ongoing partnerships valued at around $40 million.

Boeing said it has invested $22 million since 2008 in education and economic empowerment initiatives across Africa, aiming to boost talent and strengthen the continent’s aviation ecosystem.
