Carbon Markets are Running on Yesterday’s Technology

The dispute over Zimbabwe’s CORSIA-eligible carbon credits is exposing more than a fight over environmental assets.
It is exposing a deeper weakness at the heart of global carbon markets: the technological foundations supporting billions of dollars in climate finance increasingly look outdated, opaque and vulnerable to administrative failure.
For an industry built on the language of transparency, integrity and trust, that contradiction is becoming harder to ignore.
At the centre of the controversy lies a simple but uncomfortable question. Why do carbon markets continue placing enormous confidence in legacy registry systems — often highly centralised, administratively opaque and dependent on manual processes — while remaining deeply suspicious of newer digital infrastructures that could offer far greater transparency and traceability?
That question matters because carbon credits are no longer niche environmental instruments. They are evolving into high-value financial assets tied to sovereign policy, corporate compliance strategies and international climate diplomacy.
The Zimbabwe case shows how fragile confidence can become when registry governance is questioned.
Millions of carbon credits are now reportedly caught in uncertainty after disagreements emerged over their CORSIA eligibility status under the Gold Standard framework.
Zimbabwe maintains that the credits were properly issued, uniquely serialised and aligned with the required corresponding adjustments.
Yet doubts surrounding administrative and eligibility decisions have already placed substantial commercial value at risk.
Once market participants begin questioning how decisions are made, who controls registry processes and whether actions can be independently verified, technical disputes rapidly become political and financial crises.
This is where the carbon market’s technology gap becomes impossible to dismiss.
Much of today’s carbon infrastructure still operates through fragmented databases, centralised registries and internal administrative controls that outsiders struggle to audit in real time.
In practice, some systems resemble upgraded bookkeeping exercises managing assets that increasingly trade like financial securities.
That mismatch is becoming dangerous.
Carbon markets are now expected to prevent double counting across borders, track corresponding adjustments between sovereign governments, support airline compliance under CORSIA and channel billions of dollars into climate finance.
Yet the infrastructure underpinning these transactions often lacks the transparency standards routinely expected in modern financial systems.
At the same time, blockchain-based registry technologies now exist that can provide immutable transaction histories, automated audit trails, programmable compliance controls and near real-time public verification.
The contrast is stark.
In traditional systems, market participants frequently rely on trust in administrators and internal governance processes. In decentralised digital systems, verification can be embedded directly into the architecture itself.
That does not mean blockchain systems are automatically flawless. Many remain fragmented, poorly regulated or associated in investors’ minds with the speculative excesses of cryptocurrency markets.
But dismissing the technology outright is becoming increasingly difficult as distributed ledger systems mature and institutional adoption accelerates globally.
Banks are testing tokenised assets. Central banks are exploring digital currencies. Supply chains are integrating blockchain verification systems. Major financial institutions are experimenting with programmable settlement infrastructure.
Meanwhile, parts of the carbon market continue relying on registry structures that many technology experts consider inadequate for the scale and sensitivity of the assets involved.
The Zimbabwe dispute may therefore mark a turning point.
For African governments especially, the controversy raises broader questions about sovereignty and control over environmental assets.
If carbon credits tied to national resources can lose market value because of opaque external administrative processes, pressure will inevitably grow for countries to demand greater technological control over how those assets are recorded, verified and traded.
That could accelerate interest in sovereign digital carbon registries built on more transparent infrastructure, potentially reducing dependence on traditional international intermediaries.
Such a shift would carry profound implications for the balance of power within global carbon markets.
The industry’s credibility problem is no longer only environmental. It is increasingly technological.
Carbon markets are asking governments, airlines and investors to trust systems managing billions of dollars in climate-linked assets. In return, those systems must meet modern standards of transparency, resilience and auditability.
Right now, too many do not.
And in an era increasingly shaped by programmable finance and real-time digital verification, the idea that critical climate assets are still governed through opaque administrative architectures is beginning to look less like caution and more like institutional inertia.
