Business Day Africa Journalist Shines at COMESA Awards

Business Day journalist Lynet Igadwah has been recognised in this year’s COMESA Competition Commission (CCC) award for business reporters.

Ms Igadwah emerged first runner-up in the digital media category of the George Lipimile Award of Excellence, an annual recognition launched in August 2024 to honour outstanding journalists reporting on competition and consumer protection within the COMESA region.

The event held in Nairobi on October 10, 2025, recognised winners in three categories namely Television, Print, and Digital Media.

“We considered the relevance and consistency in reportage, quality, accuracy and relevant perspectives as well as ingenuity to provide relevant life examples,” said CCC director for Consumer Welfare and Advocacy Steven Kamukama, who served on the panel of judges.

Kenya Broadcasting Corporation’s (KBC) Betty Kiptum clinched the top prize in the Television category, while Paul Tentena of Uganda’s EAC Business Notifier emerged the winner in the Digital Media category.

Nomfanelo Maziya of the Eswatini Observer took home the top award in the Print category, while Ms Kelly Njombo of Zambia Daily Mail was awarded first runner-up in the Print Media category.

Ms Igadwah said she was humbled for the recognition that placed her among talented journalists across the COMESA region.

“This award is not just a personal achievement, but a reflection of the commitment and editorial excellence at Business Day Africa in advancing impactful business journalism across the region,” she said.

The COMESA Region comprises 21 Member States including Kenya.

The CCC is responsible for enforcement of the COMESA Competition Regulations in territories of all the 21 Member States in relation to restrictive business practices and mergers with a cross-border dimension and which restrict competition in the Common Market.

Dr George Lipimile, the first Director and CEO of the CCC served from 2011 to 2021, helping establish the Commission as Africa’s first fully operational regional competition authority.

The competition is codenamed in his name in recognition of the efforts and outstanding work he put in establishing the Comesa Business Reporters Forum (COMBREF)
