The African Development Bank (AfDB) has secured approval to construct a state-of-the-art headquarters in Abidjan, cementing its presence in Côte d’Ivoire’s commercial hub.

The Bank’s executive board unanimously endorsed the plan, emphasising the importance of a workspace that promotes staff well-being and aligns with the institution’s mission to support Africa’s development.

“This is a landmark moment for the African Development Bank and a reflection of our ambition to strengthen our operations and improve the workplace experience,” AfDB President Akinwumi Adesina said.

“The new building symbolises our commitment to Africa’s progress and aligns with our vision of green growth and energy efficiency.”

Dr Adesina noted that the decision marked the culmination of a vision he set in 2015 to establish a permanent headquarters in Abidjan, describing the project as crucial for boosting productivity and fostering engagement with stakeholders.

The new complex is expected to feature advanced facilities for hosting shareholders and stakeholders, while adhering to high standards of environmental sustainability and safety.

Adama Koné, the Dean of the Bank’s Boards of Directors and Côte d’Ivoire’s representative, presented the title deed for the construction site, formalising the government’s support for the project.

Dr Adesina expressed gratitude to Ivorian President Alassane Ouattara and the government, highlighting their role in facilitating the Bank’s expansion. “This decision reaffirms that Abidjan is our permanent home,” he said.

The Bank has not disclosed the project’s timeline or cost.
